Cutest Kid Contest Winner: December 2009

Meet Eleanor! She is the BCK Cutest Kid for December 2009. Congratulations!

This adorable 2 year old, who sometimes goes by "Ellie" LOVES climbing stairs, playing with tupperware, "jammin" on her guitar, "cooking", drawing, painting and general mischief.

Like most 2 year olds, she DOESN'T love being told no, waiting or jalapenos, but I know plenty of 40 year olds that don't like any of things those either.
Okay, this one throws me.  Ellie's Favorite Food? Avocado, hands down. She'll turn down an ice cream sundae for an avocado.

Favorite Color? She seems pretty fond of blue and green lately.

Favorite TV Show? Go, Diego, GO! Although her and mom watched Charlie Brown's Christmas 5 or 6 times the other day.

Favorite Book? Animal Encyclopedia, Be My Friend, Floppy Puppy and Science Outside all get equal love.

Favorite Animal? Again like most 2 year olds, Ellie likes all animals, but Pandas are getting quite a bit of attention at this moment.

As we all know, 2 year olds are like little sponges.  Eleanor is no exception.  She knows and counts to 20, can identify every letter of the alphabet and all the colors.  And, she draws pretty anatomically correct face!
As much as she likes to be pretty and girly, she equally likes to dig in mud and play with worms.  Yep, that sounds about right!

One of Ellie's more charming qualities lately is her social prowess!  She has been grabbing the paws of her pets or stuffed animals or the hands of any person nearby and saying, "Nice to meet you! My name's Eleanor".

She is a sweetie!

Retro Goodness: Oilcloth Purses

We love all things retro, especially oilcloth! We just recieved a large shipment of oilcloth purses and pouches . . . just in time for the holidays!

SO CUTE!  These fantastic purses are just (as my daugthter would say) AWESOME!! Maybe you can pick one up for yourself too!

Handmade locally here in Pennslyvania using guinine oilcloth.  Oilcloth is waterproof, versatile and cleans up with nothing more than a sponge and warm water.

Okay, so what exactly IS oilcloth?
Originally oilcloth was a heavy cotton canvas soaked in oil or liquid paraffin to make it waterproof (literally "oiled cloth"). In the 19th century it was widely used for tents, rain gear and other water repellent applications. As you might guess, the original oil cloth was highly flammable, and more than a few tents caught fire, often setting nearby buildings, wagons and other structures to the ground.

With the invention of plastic in the 20th century, oil cloth went from being oil-soaked fabric to a soft plastic fused to a canvas backing. The use of plastic allowed manufacturers to print a wide variety of colors and patterns, transforming a once dull brown textile into a brightly colored, inexpensive "oilcloth." By mid-century it was extremely popular for use as easy care table coverings, cook wear and more.

Improvements in plastics manufacturing and printing technologies continued through the end of the century making today's oilcloth better than ever. Modern oilcloth is a now a heavyweight vinyl fused to a cotton-web backing which is not only flexible, colorful and waterproof, but also fire and stain resistant, and slower to fade after long term exposure to the sun.

I think oilcloth just Yummy!  Stay tuned for even more fabulous oilcloth items in the shop including aprons, bigs and splashmats.

Hot Item for Boys!

Spoiling the little princesses in your life if easy, but I often hear how hard it is to shop for boys.  It is SO true!  Even when I am looking for new products for the shop, it is near impossible to find a unique gift (that isn't plastic) that young boys will LOVE.  Let's face it, unless it's round or some other outside gear, rarely does a cool book or really different "trinket" garner a second look.

Well, let me tell you, the Blocks for Boys collection by Bitty Block are drawing quite a bit of attention this holiday season.  Our display already has quite a few holes, but don't worry, we expect another shipment before Christmas.

These BLOCKS are the same quality and craftsmanship you except from the original Bitty Block collection, but they have been made without the crystal embellishment for a sleek, boyish look.  Pair a pendant with an inexpensive ball chain necklace and you've got a totally rad, unique gift for under $15 (yes, UNDER $15).  You knew they handcrafted on the back of reclaimed Scrabble Tiles, right?  Even cooler!!

Designs include, skateboarding, baseball, peace, lizards, rocket ships and more!

Elf on the Shelf . . . Selling Fast!

The Elf on the Shelf is moving quickly here at Beetle Creek Kids.  There must be a lot of new elves going to homes in the Kennett Square area.  I hope they will all be reporting good things back to Santa.

This set includes an 8" vintage-style pixie elf, a keepsake storage box and a children's picture book with a rhyming story that tells how the elf helps Santa out by watching children's behavior by day and reporting it to Santa at night. The elf is designed to be placed throughout the house during the Christmas season, creating a hide-and-seek activity for the whole family.

This year's edition allows you the ability to register and name your elf online at the Hall of Registry.  Find out more about it at http://www.elfontheshelf.com/

We also have the Elf on the Shelf Activity Book this year, the companion book to the much beloved The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition™. Families, teachers and all who believe will enjoy celebrating the Christmas season with their favorite elf as they play with reusable, full-color stickers, enjoy The Elf on the Shelf games, construct crafts for fun and gifts, sing along with The Elf on the Shelf North Pole singers, and more.

Don't worry we still have plenty of elves back here at our shop and online, but you better get one soon.  There are just 39 days 'til Christmas!

Cutest Kid Contest Winner: November 2009

Meet Luke (or sometimes know as "Lukie")!
He is BCK's Cutest Kid for November 2009.

Luke is 7 years old and LOVES football and baseball.  But, he doesn't love Chocolate.  Isn't Mom lucky!

His favorite food is perogies (one of my favorites too) and his favorite color is BLUE.

Now here is something fun.  Luke's favorite TV show is Seinfeld (seriously), but Mom and Dad only let him watch certain episodes.  And as expected, ANY football game is a favorite of Luke's too.

His favorite books are Officer Buckle and Gloria books.

Favorite animal is a dog.

Mom and Dad can remember many funny moments, but one that stands out happened on Luke's first birthday.  They put him in a "pamper scamper" crawling contest in Ocean City, NJ. He had just started walking the day before, and they figured he would have so much trouble walking on the sand, he would just crawl. Low and behold, he was with about 30 other crawlers and with all of his might, he walked every step of the way. He was so proud of himself! He "finished" first, but was disqualified because he didn't crawl. The moment was very telling of his personality!

Luke is the very, very proud big brother of two cute little sisters. He is a total sweetheart and always has a big (sometimes toothless!) grin on his face!

Book Signing: Blame it on Barbara

Join us this Saturday afternoon from 12pm to 2pm and meet local author CB Lilley. She will be on hand to sign her debut novel, Blame it on Barbara.

Blame it on Barbara is a riveting mystery novel targeted for kids aged 9 through 14. Several copies are currently available for purchase in our shop. Additional copies will be available on the 20th. A great summer read!

About the Author:
CB Lilley was born in Lancaster County in 1976 and grew up enjoying the relative calm of life in rural Pennsylvania. While she is not Amish, her heritage is heavily steeped in that tradition. After graduating as the valedictorian of her high school in 1994, she moved to Los Angeles and attended a writing program at the University of Southern California. After spending 10 years writing on the west coast, she grew weary of the “monster” known as Hollywood and decided to publish Blame it on Barbara. It was a difficult decision, but one which, thanks to the overwhelming success of the book, she has not had the opportunity to regret.

About the Book:
Before her grandmother came to town, Barbara Birnbaum was just an average seventh grader at Warren G. Harding Junior High in Clarence, Indiana. She was, in fact, what some might describe as exceedingly average – average height, average grades, average looks, average everything. Her older brother and sister were the family favorites, above average in almost every way, and her younger brother and sister…well they were just weird. Over time, Barbara slowly blended into the background of her own life, not just at home but also at school where she was scarcely noticed by her classmates. Barbara never imagined that she could miss her old boring life, but that was before she was being hunted down by some of the world’s most dangerous villains!
In his hometown of Los Angeles, California, Jesse Jessup was a mischievous trouble-maker whose parents had long since washed their hands of him. They shipped him off to live with his grandmother in Clarence, Indiana, where he remained a mischievous trouble-maker whose parents had long since washed their hands of him. This big-city kid from California might as well have been from Moscow, since Los Angeles seemed just as foreign a place to be from to the other kids at Warren G. Harding Junior High.
Social misfits Jesse and Barbara find friendship in each other as they embark in the greatest adventure of their lives. Jesse’s fearlessness and Barbara’s keen insight make them a perfect team of temporary CIA agents as they inadvertently land themselves smack in the middle of a dangerous mission led by Barbara’s grandmother. They’ve got no one to depend on but each other as they face rogue SVR agents, dangerous thugs, mad scientists and their own insecurities in order to save themselves, their town and possibly even the world from certain destruction.
